Communities are the bond that holds our social fabric together. They strengthen us and give us a sense of belonging and purpose. Men’s Groups are small communities and they’re a place where opportunities for personal growth are created. Most importantly, communities and Men’s Groups will challenge you to be a better version of yourself.

Most men can probably remember the day or age when they first thought to themselves, “Now, I am a man”. There might have been some pivotal moment where things felt different, you took on more responsibilities, you started paying your own way, you became a father, lost a father, or some other momentous life event occurred.

The truth is, you’re always becoming a man and there is no start and there is no end. The unfortunate thing is that most men don’t have the support they need to push themselves to continue to grow. Let’s chat about why Men’s Groups are so important and why you should consider joining one this year.

What Is The Purpose Of Men’s Groups

Men’s Groups exist to improve the lives of men by helping them become better versions of themselves. Through listening, showing an interest in each other’s lives, challenging one another and holding each other accountable, Men’s Groups encourage self-discovery and personal growth.

Why Are Men’s Groups Important?

Men’s Groups will empower you the way that great friends, coaches, partners and employers will.

What Are Men’s Groups?

Men’s Groups are local or global networks of men who want to commit themselves to becoming better versions of themselves and providing guidance to others along the way. Men’s Groups exist in all major cities across Canada and the United States and they exist globally around the world.

If you think that Men’s Groups aren’t for you, just ask yourself:

Would the boy you once were, be inspired by the man you’ve become?

If you see room for improvement in your life, maybe there are areas where you think you are slipping through the cracks or falling into old patterns of thought or destructive habits then you could benefit from being a part of something greater than yourself.

These are the kinds of questions that are necessary for personal growth that often, for males, never come up in a typical “hangout” situation at the bar or the game.

When we don’t have a good friend, partner or colleague to tell us when we’re slipping or call us out, a Men’s Group will fill that void.

How Do Men’s Groups Work?

Some groups meet in-person while others meet online and some meetings are as often as every week while some are once a month or once a year. They’re flexible because they’re designed to meet your needs and level of commitment.

What Are Common Dynamics Within Men’s Groups?

Picture 8 guys in a room with the leader, who is typically a registered therapist moderating the conversation. Everyone gets time to talk about what’s on their mind, about the deep emotional things that are bothering them. The moderator is in charge of cutting through the fluff and getting to the deep hard-to-talk about topics.

What Is The Role Of Facilitators Or Leaders In Men’s Groups?

You’re surrounded by peers of similar age and you begin sharing about your struggles. The people who are having the most pain in the session are who the moderator goes deep with.

Everyone else plays an active listening and supportive role.

At the start of the session, the facilitator lays out the ground rules. These are instructions about how to receive information and how to articulate your opinion. By using phrases like “This is how this landed on me”, people who share are protected from judgement and ridicule. Because we all perceive and handle situations differently.

What Are The Benefits Of Joining A Men’s Group?

Men’s groups allow you to practice and learn effective communication. They teach you that you don’t need to react to everything that comes your way. Instead, sometimes it’s okay to put a wall up and the important thing is to recognize patterns and behaviours.

Relationships are never perfect, they fluctuate and good relationships know how to return to the flow state or the good state. This requires recognition, compassion, humility, acceptance, communication and love.

Typically when men get together over beers or watching a sports game, they don’t have permission or the right environment to talk about deep intimate aspects of their lives. Women are much better at this than men and men should take note.
